Skillpod

The Project:

As a team of three UX designers and one engineer, our goal was to convert a company’s service, a soft skill development workshop called Skillpod, into a digital product. The objective was to create an MVP the client could take to investors to develop further.

The Research:

The process began with a workshop where our team and the client wrote cue cards describing Skillpod’s core values, as well as physical and digital locations. With these categories, we made connections amongst the cards to make unique anticipated narratives. Upon workshop completion my team was able to craft and present personas, sharing the found differences between the mentor and learner user types.

Using the workshop and personas as secondary exploratory research, the team and I made connections between Skillpod users and their environment. Through interviewing our stakeholder, we found connections between the product's core values against location, learning styles, and needs of the potential users. All this information was delivered in a presentation to the client.

Through secondary research,
4 findings were synthesized:

1. People want inspiration from each other.

2.  People tend to struggle alone because they feel insecure about the skills they lack.

3. People are looking to learn in their own personal style.

4. People experience mental blocks that stop them from succeeding.

Observations about the documentation of skillpod:

1. The content is static (no personalization).

2. Most of the current learning is based on self-assessment and perception of self.

3. All users are presented information in the same way.

4. The Professional Learning Plan (PLP) can be confusing with useful information hidden.

The Solution:

The team and I discovered the delta, to ensure the user would have a personalized experience. A particular type of learner should be able to see the content of the courses in a way that resonates with them. The team and I strategically suggested to the client to move the "Learning Style Quiz" they had to the onboarding process. This would allow the user to self-reflect (the client's intention) and inform the system on how that particular user likes to see the information. From here on out the application would be able to personalize the course content in one of four ways: pictorial, audio, video, or copy.

Through collaborative design with the client, we also concluded that we could further personalize the experience by asking the user to define the main goal they want to accomplish with the app. Due to the limitations of the available technology and funding, my team concluded that defining goals from multiple drop-down lists was best the way to have the user define this information. Based on the goals declared by the user in their onboarding, the system would then prioritize the order of the courses based on their input.

The team created low-resolution wireframes and I worked closely with the engineer to create a MVP for the client to acquire further funding. No testing was done due to time and financial constraints. Below are some examples of the MVP that was delivered to the client at the end of the contract.
